Why would I buy a Retractable Body Tape Measure instead of a regular tape measure?

Body Measuring Tape: RetractableKeeping track of inches lost is important when judging the success of a fitness program because the scale doesn’t always tell the complete story. Muscle weighs more than fat so, it’s possible to maintain the same weight or even gain weight, but still lose inches off your waist. For that reason, it’s important to measure other body parts and track body fat percentage of top of overall weight.

The challenge is that it can be difficult to measure certain body parts because you’re either trying to hold the measuring tape in place with one hand or the tape keeps slipping.

Having a retractable body tape measure with a locking pin eliminates that problem. You simply wrap it around the area you want to measure, slide the pin in the hole, and press the release button. The measuring tape will automatically slide itself taut against your body.

What body parts can it be used for?

You can measure pretty much anything.

  • Head
  • Neck
  • Shoulders
  • Chest
  • Breasts
  • Arms
  • Forearms
  • Wrists
  • Waist
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Calf
  • Ankle

Is It Accurate? It Starts at 1 and 3/4 Inches instead of zero.

Body Tape MeasureThat helps with getting fast and accurate measurements. The distance across the part of the tape measure that is held against your body is one and 3/4 inches. If the tape measure started at zero, you would have to subtract that distance from the total to get an accurate measurement. Starting at 1 and 3/4″ removes the need to do that.

If you need it to start at zero, however, the other side does just that. You’re covered either way.

If anything, it’s too accurate. I used it and it still says I’m fat. Ha ha. (For now, anyway.)

Cons of the Body Measuring Tape

Weight Loss Tape MeasureAside from the lack of color options, I can’t think of anything negative to say about it. It does it’s job and makes getting accurate measurements really easy, however, it only comes in white and a loud green.

If you need centimeters instead of inches, this might not be for you unless you don’t mind¬†converting inches to centimeters. It’s not hard to do, but some people don’t want to be bothered with the math.

It measures in inches only. Just multiple the inches by 2.54 for centimeters.

Is the Body Measuring Tape (Retractable) worth the Purchase?

Absolutely. The price is low and it does its job. As long as you treat it well, I can’t think of any reason why the retractable body measuring tape would ever fail on you. I’ve had mine since 2007 and it still works well.

  1. Ha ha I think if I brought this tape measure it would say that I am fat too!!! Anyway. This is a great idea. I have just started to return to the gym and any little tool or gadget to help keep me on track is great. I like that it’s small and light as well. I was wondering what are your other “hot tips” for keeping on track?

    1. Hi. Thanks for the comment and I’m glad you asked. I’m about to start writing articles that focus a lot on habits. There’s a lot of free information all over the Internet about what to do, what to eat, and when to do it, but few people or sites address the true source of success and failure.¬†

We have to develop productive habits and know when those habits are strongest and weakest. Our minds are on autopilot for most things. If you want success with fitness, work on your habits. I’ll show you how.

  2. I had no idea that this even existed! What a cool tool! When I read your starting question, I asked the same thing; what does it matter? You are right though, measuring inches does a lot more than the scale, and does more for showing progress.
Along with that, a regular tape measure is easy to drop or slip off and is hard to use alone.
My only stipulation is it not having centimeters, although I would use inches anyway, having grown up with the standard system. Multiplying doesn’t take any time at all.
Awesome review, I am really interested in this product now!
